When my son was about nine years old, he became our Civil War company’s drummer boy. In 2012, while at a Civil War event at Ridley Creek State Park in Pennsylvania, we had our son’s picture taken by a wet plate photographer.
While he was waiting for his turn to have his image struck, a friend from our unit who is an artist asked if he could take a picture of him for a painting.

Photographic chemicals are used to coat a blackened piece of tin. After exposure it is rinsed, as seen in the image below.
